Malahide Golf Club

Other Activities

In addition to Golf, Malahide Golf Club also offers members a range of diverse activities, particularly during the winter months. These include Snooker, Art, Choir, Bridge and Poker.

Malahide Golf Club Singers & Choir

The Malahide Golf Club Singers and Choir meet every Wednesday evening throughout the winter months and are continuously recruiting new members. They have performed on a number of occasions in the Club, most notably at the recent President's night and the general view was that they provided excellent entertainment to all in attendance.

Malahide Snooker Club

Malahide Golf Club has its very own Snooker room located on the ground floor, accommodating two full sized Snooker Tables, available for members use. Visitors and Juveniles must be accompanied by a Member at all times.

The lights are controlled by two token-operated metres, with tokens available from the Bar or Main Office outside of Bar opening hours. These are charged at 1 euro each and are valid for 20 minutes light. For access to the Snooker room a key is signed out from the bar in exchange for a member’s swipe card or credit card, which is returned when the key is returned.

The Snooker group play mainly during the winter months and participate in the North Dublin Snooker League. Matches take place on Monday nights throughout January and February and there are typically about 10 clubs represented.

Malahide’s only ever success in the competition was back in 1998 when the team was represented by Alan Reilly (current League Secretary) , Martin Craddock, Pat Hanley (RIP), Liam Purdy, Vincent Bissett, Gerry Hickey, Tommy Rusk, Kieran Killeen, Jim McMahon, Bruno Lupo and player-manager Tony Walsh. Tony, aka ‘The King’ is always keen to point out that he is the only Team Manager ever to have recorded a win in this competition.

It is a very sociable and fun night out and anyone wishing to get involved or just looking to ‘get out’ on a Monday night, please contact Tommy Rusk on 085-1740777 or Alan Reilly on 087-2346059.

Malahide Art Club

Founded 12 years ago, the Art Group has an active cohort of approximately 35 members. The Group meets every Thursday from 8-10pm for season classes which start each January. The Club also organises lectures and gallery visits. The artists work through a variety of media including oils, watercolours and charcoal. The creative output of this group is exhibited annually in the Clubhouse during November.

It is most appropriate that our Art Group is an integral part of Malahide Golf Club.
Right from the very beginning of the Club, art and golf have been interlinked. Fite fuaite le chéile mar a dearfá. In fact the club was founded by an eminent artist who was an artist first and a golfer second.
In 1887, Nathaniel Hone, an artist with a growing international reputation, left Malahide, with his wife Magdalen for a visit to Paris. Incidentally Magdalen was Magdalen Jameson of the famous whiskey family and her parents owned the land on which Portmarnock Golf Club was built in 1894.
In 1887, Nathaniel and Magdalen went to Paris to visit a former art student of Nathaniels’ called Harry Steines Cairnes. Cairnes was originally from a town called Pau at the foothills of the Pyrenees. Unfortunately Cairnes died and after the funeral Nathaniel Hone and his wife departed for Pau where they commiserated with the Cairnes family.
Pau was the site of the first golf club established on the Continent of Europe. It was founded in 1856. Many of the wealthy British and Irish went to Pau for the winter and took up golf, including the Jamesons who introduced Hone to the game of golf. And so history records that art played a major role in the founding of Malahide Golf Club.

All enquires relating to the Art Club, please contact Anne Feeney, Chairperson, Ann Roche, Treasurer or Ann O Sullivan, Secretary.
