Juvenile News Summer 2012
The Juvenile Girls did very well this year coming 4th in the final league after a slow start they battled well and some of the girls had great scores. Orla Mc Kiernan had a great score of 45 points in Sutton in one of the Fingal league games. She lost an impressive number of shots this year and is now playing off a handicap of 23. Eleven of our girls from cadets and Juveniles took part in an ILGU day in Hollywood Lakes in 6, 9, and 18 hole competitions and all went home happy with prizes for all. Niamh Purcell, our Girl’s Juvenile captain had a good turnout for her day and a lot of the same girls enjoyed our Lady Captains Liz's day with Niamh Purcell winning on the day.
Juvenile Boys News
After a busy summer of competition, the Juvenile Boys had a successful year with a superb win in the Fingal League and the report of this great success can be found on the cover page of the magazine. The Boys also reached the quarter finals of the Leinster under 15 Championships where, despite a great performance on the day, lost a very close battle 3-2 to Balbriggan. Throughout this competition we used a total of 10 players, which shows our strength in depth in one of the most important age groups for the future of the Club. The players involved were Daniel Murphy, Karl Kennedy, Sam Nolan, Jamie Kennedy, Brian Whelan, AJ McCabe, Robert Byrne, Harry Doyle, Ciaran Conway, and Evan Gaffney. A special thanks goes to Colin Sheils and Leo Connolly who managed this team. Colin and Leo are not long out of the Juvenile Section themselves and did a fantastic job with our under 15s in their first attempt at management. It is a credit to them that they were willing to give up their time for the Club given their college and work commitments.
We held all our major competitions over the summer months including the Juvenile Captain Paul O'Sullivan’s Prize which was won by Stephen Bradley, Andrew Conlon won Vice Captain Bill Lowe's Prize to the Men. Our President Donal Lennon’s Prize won by Daniel Murphy and our Captain Fred Moran’s Prize to the Juveniles which was won by Robert Byrne. Congratulations to all the winners throughout the summer; the only disappointing aspect was being the low turnout for competitions with only an average of 50 out of 120 Juveniles participating. We expect a significant improvement in these numbers in the coming year.
In August we held the Juvenile Pro-Am for the second year and this was again a great success and enjoyed by all the Juveniles. Sixteen teams took part in the Regional Qualifying Round and two Malahide teams made it through to the Final to be held in St Helen's Bay in September. The winning team on the day was Paul O Sullivan, Conor Murray and Scott Porter (all Malahide) and Sam Nolan, Matt Nolan and Alex Mannion (Malahide) also qualified. Well done to the qualifiers and the very best of luck in the Final. A special thanks to John and Michelle Murray for all their help in organising this event.
Throughout the Summer the GUI held the 4 Provincial Boys Championships along with the Irish Boys Championships and this year we had three Juveniles competing in these Championships namely Conor Sutton, Andrew Conlon and Philip Smith. When you consider the handicap required to qualify for these events is normally 5 or less, to have three representatives is fantastic for the future of Malahide GC. Conor had great success in the Connacht boys finishing runner-up, which was a great achievement. Andrew had a great run in Connacht, Munster and Leinster making the cut in all 3 events and finishing well up the field. What is great for Malahide golf club is the fact that we have players not only taking part in these Championships but also competing for the major prizes and I have no doubt that these three players along with some new players from Malahide will get very close to victory next year. It is also excellent for the Juvenile Section of the Club that Conor, Andrew and Philip played a big role in this years Senior cup team that reached the Leinster semi-final where the eventual winners, Castle Golf Club, narrowly beat them.
As the season comes to an end, the Juvenile Match play is at the quarterfinal stages with the final being played on the 6th of October along with all the other club finals. A reminder to all Juveniles that competitions will be held during the mid-term break in November and our Juvenile Captain’s Dinner takes place on December 27th. Please make every effort to support these events.
