Mick Lawler wins Bill Lowe's Captains Prize

(07 Jul 2013)

Mick Lawler won Bill Lowe's Captains Prize on Saturday in very exciting circumstances defeating John Muldowney on the 4th Playoff Hole. Mick and John had both completed their 36 holes with 77 stableford points, Mick adding 36 points to the 41 points he had scored the previous week that had resulted in him holding a narrow one point lead. John, who had scored 39 points in week one added a further 38 points resulting in a tie. The play-off was over 3 holes (1 Red, 8 and 9 Yellow) with Mick having 1 shot (9 yellow) and John having 3 shots. After John had parred the first two tie holes with Mick making par, birdie John held a 1 point lead playing the last hole only for Mick to make an excellent par with John taking bogey. With both players on 8 points, that meant sudden death which was held on the 9th yellow and when Mick drove into the bunker on the right hand side and found himself in the trees ahead after two shots, it looked like it was going to be John's day as he was perfectly placed on the left hand side of the fairway after 2 shots . However,  much drama had yet to unfold and after Mick had punched a low shot to to the 200 metres mark and hit a great fourth shot that ran over the back of the green, John's approach caught the overhanging trees and suddenly it was 'Game On' again. John played an excellent pitch onto the left hand side of the green which made him favourite again only for Mick to play the shot of the day floating a lob wedge onto the edge of the green and running down the hill to within inches of the cup. John's difficult approach putt came up a few feet short and, when his next putt lipped out, Mick had the simple task of tapping in his short putt for victory. The victory was Mick's fourth Captains Prize which is a record in Malahide Golf Club.
