Juvenile News

Juvenile News It has been a very good summer for the Juvenile boys of Malahide Golf Club, especially our under 15 team, who have reached the Leinster Final against Bray Golf Club. This is a fantastic achievement for Martin Dunne and his team of Andrew Conlon, Pierce Finnegan, Alex Mannion, Sam Nolan, Philip Rusk, Stephen Ryan and Andrew Murray-Perrick. We wish the boys the very best of luck in the second leg of this two-leg final that takes place in Bray on Sunday 18th of September. The lads have an uphill task ahead of them as they trail 4-1 from the opening leg but will take a lot of encouragement from the Best Cup team who turned around a similar first leg deficit. We have also had some notable individual performances including Andrew Conlon who finished Runner-Up in the Ulster Boys Under 15 Championship. One of our Cadets, AJ McCabe, also won the best net in the Leinster under 13 series, which was a superb achievement when you consider that AJ is only 11 years of age.The Fingal league team had a good performance this year finishing 4th out of 16 teams. Over the course of this competition we used a total of 20 different players of various handicap, which is testament to the strength of our Juvenile section. A big thanks goes to Paddy Smith and Donal Hughes who both gave up their time each Monday to look after the team. Juvenile competitions over the summer months were well supported but we would like to see more Juveniles playing in these competitions. Our Juvenile Captains (Eoin Sweeney and Rachel Gallagher) Prizes were held in July with Conor Murray winning the Boys competition and Niamh Purcell taking the Girls event. Two more Juvenile competitions will be held in 2011, the first will take place on 3rd of November with the final competition of the year on 27th of December. We also arranged a series of Adult/Juvenile competitions throughout the year and these have been very well supported. The final two such competitions are scheduled to take place on 11th of September and 26th of December and all are welcome. Darragh Smith Junior Pro Am On Friday 25th August 2011, Malahide Golf Club hosted one of the five Regional Qualifiers for Ireland’s only Junior Pro Am Series. Twenty teams competed in this Official Tournament of the Irish PGA which was run in association with Citrus Golf. Each team comprised of three Juniors (Boys or Girls aged between 12 – 18 years of age) and one Assistant PGA Pro. Eight girls from Malahide GC took part in the event. Each team’s aim was to finish in the top three places in order to go forward to October’s Grand Final in St. Helens Bay Golf Resort. Despite heavy torrential rain towards the end of the round, local knowledge and skill seemed to prove beneficial with two of Malahide Golf Clubs Junior Teams coming first and third. There was great camaraderie and anticipation following the event, as scores were entered, totalled and the final results calculated. The eventual winners with 97 points were Conor Sutton, Philip Rusk and Shane O’Reilly from Malahide Golf Club, with their Assistant Pro Bernard Fitzgerald from Beechpark GC. In second place with 92 points were Caoimhe Russell, Kevin Mc- Cabe and Graham Lynch from County Louth GC, playing with their Assistant Pro Robert Hogan from Halpeny GC. In third place with 89 points were Pierce Finnegan, Alex Mannion and Daniel Colclough from Malahide Golf Club, playing with their Assistant Pro Gregory Leech from South County GC. In the Assistant Pro Competition Peter Hannon (Co Meath GC) and Mark O’Sullivan (Ashbourne GC) shared the spoils in a tie for first place. Overall a great day and special thanks to Frederick Moran, Malahide’s Vice Captain, John Murray, Malahide’s Golf Professional and Tiernan Byrne from Citrus Golf for making the day possible. Finally, here’s wishing the three winning teams every success in October’s Final. Mark Gannon General Manager

Malahide win Best Cup

Malahide's Best Cup Team, managed by Thomas Magner won the Best Cup here at Malahide Golf Club on Sunday 4th September. Trailing 4 - 1 from the first leg against Hazelgrove GC many had written the home team off and after losing the first match the omens did not look good. However, that 'never die attitude' surfaced and the team played out of their skins to ultimately win the Final and secure another Pennant for Malahide Golf Club.
